Teachers in Space

Filed under: Alex Michael Bonnici,Teachers in Space — ralphbuttigieg @ 9:21 am
Following hot on the trail blazed forth by Barbara Morgan and Christa McAuliffe other teachers may be slated to take that one small step and send education on a giant leap forward into the high frontier of space. The job of the professional educator is not only to instruct the next generation but to inspire it to greater heights of achievement. The next generation of educator astronauts will bring new meaning to the phrase “a higher education” by inspiring a new generation of youngsters to pursue careers in science and technology. The Space Frontier Foundation wants to send two teachers boldly going where few teachers have gone before within the next two years.

“In a bid to inspire the younger generation, the private Space Frontier Foundation is looking for two teachers — Pathfinders — who will become the first educators to fly to space and then return to the classroom.

The foundation, in partnership with the United States Rocket Academy, has revived the Teachers in Space program originally run by U.S. space agency NASA.

The idea of sending teachers to space was conceived in the 1980s by U.S. President Reagan. The goal was to pick the first “citizen passenger” and promote the space program”.

The epic voyages to come of the teacher astronaut will do much to transform our classrooms into spaceships of the imagination. The classroom must transcend the limitations of space and time to inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers to take us on new voyages of discovery and innovation. In an age of growing apathy and despair our generation and the next need that motivation to look beyond the problems that vex us and visualize and actualize the solutions that lay ahead. We must inspire the next generation to take a leap of the imagination and take the bold steps that will create a world which has conquered poverty, hunger, disease and illiteracy. The world of tomorrow must be one that has solved the energy crisis and reversed the trend towards environmental and climatic degradation. These are bold challenges that require bold visions and solutions to solve them. And, it was the same bold vision and mindset that allowed the previous generation to set their sights on the Moon and reach it.

The Space Frontier Foundation wants to put a thousand astronaut teachers into American schools within the next decade. If you hope to be one of those courageous thousand you have till December 4, 2008 to apply.
